The Bible and The Hunger Games
As I was reading the second chapter of our reading, I noticed that there was a man named Cato. Cato seemed to be a sadistic person who didn't care about the pain of others. The name alone made me think of The Hunger Games, but both people seem to be very similar. Cato in The Hunger Games is one of the most sadistic antagonists in the first novel.I kept wondering if Collins knew about this. Her book already deals with a lot, so why not have a reference to the Bible? She wrote about very dark themes so it makes sense to have a sadistic character be a reference to another sadistic character. I thought that this was a really interesting connection.

Trees and Knowledge
Chapter fifteen speaks of essentially a tree of knowledge. It made me realize how many different things use the idea of the tree of knowledge. In Christianity, when Eve ate an apple from the tree, she realized that she was naked and God punished her. In Norse mythology Odin hung from a tree of knowledge with a spear in his side so he could gain more information. Even in the video game series The Legend of Zelda one of the wisest characters is a tree. I find it interesting that trees produce knowledge. I'll be looking out for more intelligence trees in the future.

The Journey Not the Destination
In class we discussed the idea of not worrying about the results of our actions. We're always told not to sweat the little things, but how easy is that? If you're like me, it's not that easy. With my writing I always have to sweat the small stuff. I have to pick my words carefully and set up the scene perfectly so everything can fall in place. The little things need to be noticed or everything could fall apart. So when should this philosophy be used? Writing is a major part of my life. I find it interesting that I can't use this simply idea for something that I do almost every day.
